Setting Realistic Goals to Overcome Social Anxiety

Nov 19 / Katy Morin
Social anxiety can be crippling, impacting various aspects of our lives, from our careers to our relationships. As someone who has overcome social anxiety and now works as a Social Anxiety Coach and Certified Hypnotherapist, I understand the massive challenges that come with this condition. The journey to recovery is unique, but one crucial aspect often overlooked is setting realistic goals.
The Power of Setting Achievable Goals
Setting achievable goals is the cornerstone of overcoming social anxiety. When people with social anxiety set goals that are too ambitious or unattainable, they often experience setbacks and increase their anxiety. By focusing on realistic, step-by-step goals, they can gradually build their confidence and overcome their social anxiety with less frustration.

Strategies for Goal Setting and Tracking Progress

1. Start Small

Begin with small, manageable goals that align with your comfort zone. For example, setting a goal to attend a social gathering for a short period, such as 15 minutes, can be a significant achievement for someone with social anxiety.

2. Use SMART Goals

Make your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Instead of saying, “I want to be less anxious in social situations,” a SMART goal might be, “I will attend a social event for one hour without experiencing overwhelming anxiety within the next month.”

3. Divide and Conquer

Divide larger goals into smaller, more feasible steps. If your ultimate goal is to give a presentation at work, break it down into researching the topic, creating the presentation, practicing in front of a mirror, and finally presenting to a trusted friend or colleague.

4. Track Your Progress

Keep a journal or use a goal-tracking app to record your progress. Note your thoughts, feelings, and reactions during social situations. This can help you identify patterns, triggers, and areas for improvement.

5. Celebrate Small Wins

Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how minor they may seem. Each success, however small, is a step in the right direction. Often, people with social anxiety focus only on the negative aspects. Taking the time to celebrate one good thing that happened when facing your fears can be beneficial.

Common Goals for Individuals with Social Anxiety

1. Attending Social Events

Gradually increase your comfort zone with social gatherings by setting goals to attend them. Begin with smaller events, like family gatherings or close friends’ get-togethers, and work up to larger, more challenging situations.

2. Public Speaking

If social anxiety affects your professional life, setting a goal to improve your public speaking skills is valuable. Start with speaking in front of a mirror, then progress to presenting in front of a trusted friend or family member. Joining a Toastmasters club was one of the best things I have done to conquer my social anxiety.

3. Self-Compassion

Setting a goal to practice self-compassion is essential. This can involve recognizing and challenging negative self-talk and actively replacing it with positive, affirming thoughts.

4. Seek Professional Help

It’s okay to seek the assistance of a Social Anxiety Coach, Therapist, or Hypnotherapist. A goal may be to find a suitable professional to support your journey.
